This stage takes a student from basic solo operations to preparations for VFR cross country flights as well as night and instrument training. To the dedicated pilot and with a little luck from the weather, this stage can be completed rather quickly. It is also a fun stage, since you are building on skills you have already learned. Included in this outline are a number of recommended videos and files for your review. They are designed to prepare you in some respect for your cross country flights.
Private Pilot Lesson 9. This lesson is your first supervised solo. It may not immediately come after your stage check, since conditions for solo flight may not be present. Unlike Stage I, flights in Stage II are often conducted slightly out of sequence.

DownloadPrivate Pilot Lesson 11. This lesson teaches the proper technique for short and soft field TO/L, as well as reviews the ground reference maneuvers. The soft field TO/L may seem awkward on a hard surface, but if you ever land on a grass strip, you will quickly come to understand why the maneuver is done the way it is.

DownloadPrivate Pilot Lesson 12. This is the second solo flight and should be conducted in the traffic pattern. Remember, a SSA instructor MUST be present and release you for the flight after checking your log book, the aircraft and the weather. If there is any doubt about the safety of the flight, the instructor may not want to release you. This flight should consist of normal takeoffs and landings in the traffic pattern.
Files coming soon.
Private Pilot Lesson 13. This is a local solo flight. An instructor must again be present to release the flight. You will tailor your own plan. Be prepared to brief your plan to the instructor.
Private Pilot Lesson 14. This lesson introduces VOR operations and should also include use of the GPS for navigational purposes as well. These are two of the three navigational methods. Remember that you will need a view limiting device. It is best to purchase your own.

DownloadPrivate Pilot Lesson 16. This is your first night flight. Expect that your night flight will be smoother and you will probably have the airport all to yourself. The private pilot requirement is to complete 10 take offs and landings to a full stop at night. You will probably do at least half these during this flight. Remember to bring one good flashlight for the preflight and a small, red filter flashlight for in-flight viewing. There are numerous, small lights that can attach to a cap's bill or will comfortable bands to wrap around your head that work very well.

DownloadPrivate Pilot Lesson 17. This is your first of at least two and perhaps three cross country flight. A second flight to Charlottsville (CHO) is usually necessary so that your can meet the requirement 3 take offs and landings at a tower controlled airport. Since CHO is a towered airport, you should review the handout below, Operations at Charlottesville, prior to your lesson. For the cross country flight, you and your instructor should go to an airport that is at least 50 NM from Shannon and return integrating as many of the different navigational methods. Planning will take a while for this flight, but as you progress in your flying, things will become quicker easier.
Private Pilot Lesson 18. This is your second night flight and should complete the requirement for night flying. It is also a good time to review navigation by reference to GPS and VORs.
